Is it harmful to eat boogers? A doctor explains.

Is it harmful to eat boogers? A doctor explains.

Swallowing nasal mucus itself isn't dangerous. Mucus, dust, and microparticles accumulate in the nose and are trapped by the body's natural filter. When this mixture reaches the stomach, it is broken down by stomach acid.

The harm stems not from swallowing itself, but from the process of nose picking. This habit can lead to mucosal trauma, damage to the nasal septum, and even perforation. Furthermore, fingers accumulate a large number of microbes, which are easily introduced into the nasal cavity and can cause inflammation or, if swallowed, gastrointestinal upset.

To maintain proper nasal hygiene, I recommend using gentle methods: using a cotton swab with olive or almond oil, as well as rinsing with saline solutions. If pain, discomfort, or bleeding occurs, consult an ENT specialist.
