GDR and NIL respond to allegations of killing patients

The NIL and GDR Expert Council have expressed their strong opposition to the accusations of euthanasia made in the Polish Sejm and during the session of the Parliamentary Team for the Protection of Life and Health of Poles. The Supreme Medical Chamber appeals to stop disinformation about futile therapy and demands action against people who spread hatred and false accusations against doctors.
- The Presidium and the Expert Council of the Supreme Medical Council are concerned about the accusations of euthanasia and killing patients that were made during the session of the Parliamentary Team for the Protection of Life and Health of Poles and in the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. Such claims result from ignorance and confusion between the concept of futile therapy and euthanasia, which is not only untrue, but also harmful to the image of the medical profession and relations with patients - it was written on the official Facebook profile of the Supreme Medical Chamber.
As we read in the official position of the Supreme Medical Council:
The Presidium of the Supreme Medical Council adopts as its own the position of the Expert Council of the Supreme Medical Chamber of 21 February 2025 regarding futile therapy, which constitutes an annex to the position.
We demand that participants in public life immediately stop spreading disinformation regarding futile therapy and at the same time we demand that state authorities immediately draw consequences against individuals and organizations that use hate speech, hate speech and make criminal threats against doctors and dentists practicing their profession in accordance with current medical knowledge.
The Expert Council of the Supreme Medical Chamber expressed full support for the joint position of the Polish Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care and the Polish Society of Internists on the issue of preventing futile therapy. Accusations against doctors of using euthanasia and killing patients, which were made during the sessions of the Parliamentary Team for the Protection of Life and Health of Poles and the Sejm of the Republic of Poland on 4 and 5 February 2025, were firmly rejected.
The Council of Experts indicated that these accusations resulted from a misunderstanding of the concept of futile therapy and confusing it with euthanasia, the use of which is illegal in Poland. It was also emphasized that such statements demonstrate a lack of familiarity with the guidelines on futile therapy.
In connection with this, the Council of Experts appealed to the Speaker of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland to take action against people publicly accusing doctors of deliberately killing patients. In addition, it was proposed that the Supreme Medical Council initiate a media campaign aimed at supporting the idea of preventing futile therapy.
