Endometriosis: recruitment for the EndoRNA test has started

Endometriosis: recruitment for the EndoRNA test has started

It is believed that approximately 1 in 100 women can be diagnosed with endometriosis. Diagnostics still take too long, will this change? The Gynaecological and Obstetrics Clinical Hospital of the Medical University of Poznań has started recruiting patients for the Medical Research Agency study on the EndoRNA test, the aim of which is to compare its effectiveness in diagnosing endometriosis with the laparoscopic method.

Endometriosis is a disease that affects approximately 6 to 10% of women aged 15-49. According to experts, the disease may affect up to 3 million women in our country. The main problem is the late diagnosis of endometriosis, after an average of 6-8 years of pain that excludes women from normal functioning in society and from professional activity.

We wrote about what the everyday life of endopolists looks like in the material below:

EndoRNA Endometriosis Test

As reported by the Medical Research Agency, there is currently a lack of reimbursed, easily accessible methods with high sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of endometriosis that could be used on an outpatient basis. The proposed own study of the Medical Research Agency entitled "A comparative study assessing the use of the non-invasive EndoRNA test in the diagnosis of endometriosis compared to laparoscopy" aims to assess the specificity and sensitivity and to demonstrate the usefulness of the EndoRNA test compared to laparoscopy in detecting endometriosis at an early stage, which will positively affect the improvement of the endometriosis diagnostic process.

We wrote more about the test itself in the material below:

It is believed that approximately 1 in 100 women can be diagnosed with endometriosis. However, if we are talking about patients who have fertility problems, this percentage is much higher and concerns almost 50% of patients who cannot get pregnant. Without treatment, only 50% of patients with mild endometriosis get pregnant, but only ¼ of women with moderate endometriosis and a few percent of women with severe endometriosis. However, what is crucial, in order to properly adapt the treatment to the patients, they must first be diagnosed. We believe that the proposed test will speed up diagnostics, reduce costs, and most importantly, reduce the need for patients to undergo surgery, and the test will allow endometriosis to be diagnosed in outpatient settings.

- emphasizes prof. dr hab. n. med. Ewa Wender-Ożegowska, Head of the Reproduction Clinic and Department of Perinatal Medicine at UMP, National Consultant in the field of obstetrics and gynecology - researcher coordinating the test validation in Poland.

The Gynecological and Obstetrics Clinical Hospital of the Medical University of Poznań is one of five centers in Poland where the study will be conducted. The main researcher at the Poznań center is prof. dr hab. n. med. Małgorzata Kędzia, a specialist in gynecology, obstetrics and perinatology, author of over 100 scientific publications, about half of which concern endometriosis. Throughout Poland, 500 patients will be collected during the study.

We hope that the endoRNA test will indeed prove useful, that it has high reliability, as declared by scientists from the Medical University of Warsaw. This is indicated by individual cases of its use, which we know about - emphasizes prof. dr hab. n. med. Małgorzata Kędzia . The research will allow us to check it on a sufficiently large group of patients. The endoRNA test is a minimally invasive test and consists of taking a small sample of the uterine mucosa through the cervical canal, in which the concentration of a selected protein (FUT4) is analyzed. Data published by scientists from the Medical University of Warsaw on a group of 77 women indicate that this test distinguishes women with endometriosis from women without the condition with a very high probability - adds prof. M. Kędzia.

How to participate in the EndoRNA test clinical trial?

Recruitment began on February 22. Participation in the study is free of charge. Who can participate? Patients aged 18-45 years can qualify for participation in the study: with suspected endometriosis, in whom there are no abnormalities in tests (ultrasound and/or MRI) or/and the results are ambiguous for interpretation (ultrasound and/or MRI) despite clinical symptoms suggesting endometriosis. and who did not decide to undergo hormonal treatment (previously not treated with hormones (oestrogen-gestagen preparations or gestagens or gonadoliberin analogues)), with ultrasound and/or MRI results suggesting the probability of endometriosis, who did not decide to undergo hormonal treatment (previously not treated with hormones (oestrogen-gestagen preparations or gestagens or gonadoliberin analogues)), with suspected endometriosis, treated with hormones (oestrogen-gestagen preparations or gestagens or gonadoliberin analogues).

Each patient will undergo a non-invasive EndoRNA test, and its results will be compared with the results from laparoscopy - we read in the release.
