What is hemophilia and how many cases are there in Mexico?

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) cares for 2,700 of the country's 5,000 hemophiliacs.
The IMSS offers cutting-edge multidisciplinary treatments for the care of patients with hemophilia, which improve the quality of life for these patients, said hematologist María Teresa García Lee.
The specialist, assigned to the Dr. Carlos Mac Gregor Sánchez Navarro Regional General Hospital (HGR) No. 1, explained that these are third- and fourth-generation recombinants, plasma-derived, non-replacement treatments that are useful for patients with inhibitors and an innovative therapeutic approach to factors with an extended half-life .
In Social Security, he said, treatments for patients with hemophilia include the intervention of a hematologist (adult or pediatric), an orthopedist, rehabilitation and psychology staff, in Second and Third Level Medical Care Units .
And depending on the illnesses that the beneficiary may develop, such as diabetes or hypertension, the participation of specialists in infectious diseases, internal medicine, among other medical disciplines is considered .
He explained that preventive medicine activities are also available in the Family Medicine Units, focusing on obesity prevention, diabetes prevention, oral health, and health promotion.
The hematology specialist stated that The Mexican Social Security Institute has a registry, as of 2024, of approximately 2,700 patients with hemophilia, out of the 5,000 that exist in the Mexican Republic. .
It is a hemorrhagic disease that is passed from parents to children through chromosomes; it is a defect that causes those who suffer from it to lack a coagulation factor: factor VIII in the case of hemophilia A, or factor IX in hemophilia B, which causes bleeding symptoms in patients. .
However, the specialist from the Comprehensive Hemostasis and Thrombosis Center at HGR 1 noted that bleeding often doesn't correspond to the triggering stimulus. Minor bruises or small injections, such as those with vaccines, can cause very large bruises.
In other cases, he said, A common manifestation of the condition may present as joint inflammation or bleeding after a surgical or dental procedure, where the bleeding is not as severe as the surgery. .
Dr. García Lee indicated that clinical suspicion is important in diagnosing hemophilia, since when a patient presents bleeding, laboratory tests are necessary, including coagulation times .
When these are abnormally elongated, he stressed, the beneficiary should be referred to a hematologist , adult or pediatric, even if there is a family history of hemophilia with adequate clotting times.
Although hemophilia occurs mostly in men, the hematology specialist said, it has no predilection for any social group . "Anyone can suffer from hemophilia."
