The only exercise that contact lens wearers should not do

Contact lenses offer a practical and aesthetic alternative to glasses. However, experts say this ease of use also carries serious risks in some cases. Wearing contact lenses, especially when in contact with water, can have dangerous consequences for eye health.
SWIMMING WITH LENSES CARRIES SERIOUS RISKSIn a video shared on social media, ophthalmologist Suraj Kukadia warned users about an important issue. Dr. Sooj stated that swimming in lakes, lagoons, jacuzzis, and swimming pools with contact lenses significantly increases the risk of infection. Citing the experience of a social media user, the doctor explained that a complication that begins just hours after swimming can lead to temporary vision loss that can last for months.
THE DANGER OF ACANTAMOEBA KERATITISAccording to experts, the underlying cause of this risk is a microscopic organism called Acanthamoeba. This aquatic organism can attach to the surface of contact lenses and infect the eyes. This can lead to a corneal infection called Acanthamoeba Keratitis, which is difficult to treat and extremely painful.
This organism can be found not only in lakes and oceans, but also in tap water, pools, hot tubs, and even soil and air. Normally harmless, Acanthamoeba can infect the cornea upon contact with the eyes, causing serious problems including permanent vision loss.
SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENTIn the early stages of Acanthamoeba keratitis, sensitivity to light, watery eyes, and blurred vision due to corneal irregularities may occur. During treatment, patients are usually prescribed antiseptic drops, which may need to be applied hourly in the first few days. Experts emphasize that if symptoms appear, an ophthalmologist should be consulted immediately.
IF YOU NEED TO GO INTO THE WATER, CHOOSE DAILY LENSESDoctors recommend wearing prescription glasses instead of contact lenses when swimming. If contact lenses must be worn in the water, it's recommended to use disposable daily lenses only and discard them immediately afterward.
