Harvard expert warns: This state of bananas upsets the intestines

The importance of a balanced diet for a healthy body is undeniable. However, according to experts, not all fruits are equally beneficial. Harvard-educated gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi, while listing the beneficial and harmful fruits for gut health, came up with a surprising choice: overripe bananas.
Ripe bananas harm the intestinesAccording to Dr. Sethi, overripe bananas are high in sugar, causing rapid spikes in blood sugar and providing less beneficial effects to gut bacteria. Research shows that as bananas ripen, their resistant starch and fiber content decreases, while their sugar content increases. This negatively impacts the digestive system.
GREEN BANANAS ARE MORE BENEFICIALResistant starches, which aren't broken down in the digestive system, act as prebiotics, feeding beneficial bacteria in the gut. For this reason, slightly green bananas are considered gut-friendly. Dr. Sethi gave bananas that are almost green a 5 out of 10, while he categorized ripe bananas as a bad thing.
WHICH ARE THE GUT-FRIENDLY FRUITS?According to a specialist doctor, blueberries and pomegranates are among the most gut-friendly fruits. These fruits, thanks to their powerful antioxidant properties, reduce inflammation and support heart health. Kiwifruit, with its high fiber content, also aids digestion and reduces the risk of constipation.
ORANGE AND GRAPE SURPRISEApples, pears, and melons ranked in the middle, while oranges and grapes received unexpectedly lower scores. It was noted that excessive citrus consumption, in particular, can increase the risk of skin cancer. However, experts emphasize that vitamin C, when consumed in moderation, is essential for the immune system.
Choosing the right fruit protects intestinal healthDr. Sethi's statements once again underscored the importance of making the right choices regarding daily fruit consumption. He emphasized that overripe bananas should be avoided and instead, fruits rich in fiber and antioxidants should be preferred to maintain intestinal health.
