Research has shown that an intelligent person can be recognized by the way they speak. It turns out that they don't rely on intuition, but on calibrated probabilities. They think probabilistically, meaning they assess situations in terms of probability.

Intelligent people are distinguished by the way they formulate their thoughts.

According to the website schwaebische.de – cited by Business Insider – research conducted as part of the Good Judgment Project showed that the best participants, so-called superforecasters, were characterized by high intelligence and openness to diverse perspectives. They explained that they regularly updated their predictions by expressing them as probabilities.

BI reports suggest that people who use phrases like "I consider it likely—about 60 percent" may be exceptionally intelligent. Expressing themselves this way, it turns out, is a sign of higher mental agility and better decision-making, meaning probabilistic thinking.

Translations from the website schwaebische.de also show that probabilistic people rarely use statements like "it will definitely happen," and instead say: "I estimate there is a 70% chance of success, but if X happens, that drops to 50%."

Researchers explain that this way of expressing their opinions is more precise and open to change, while probabilistic thinking forces people to be more precise and verify their predictions.

These individuals learn faster from mistakes and cope better with uncertainty, Business Insider emphasizes. Research shows that this approach leads to better decisions and greater effectiveness.
