This problem, which starts in the mouth, spreads throughout the body: A single precaution eliminates the risk.

"Gum health isn't just about supporting your teeth. It's about protecting your body," cautions Dr. Jason Auerbach, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in New Jersey. Research shows that inflammation in the gums can trigger heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory problems.

If it progresses, it can lead to tooth loss.

Gums anchor teeth tightly, preventing bacteria from reaching the roots and jawbone. However, bacterial plaque accumulated on teeth hardens over time and turns into tartar. This releases toxins, leading to gum inflammation called gingivitis.

If gingivitis progresses, it can damage the jawbone, leading to receding gums and tooth loss. This inflammation can also worsen many serious health problems, from cardiovascular disease to respiratory problems.

ALMOST HALF OF ADULTS ARE ALIVE

The main causes of gum disease are:

  • Inadequate oral hygiene,
  • Smoking,
  • Diabetes,
  • Genetic predisposition,
  • Existing health problems.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 47 percent of American adults suffer from some form of gum disease.

A SINGLE PRECAUTION ELIMINATES THE RISK

Dr. Auerbach recommends using "water flossing" as an alternative to traditional floss. This device uses a powerful jet of water to remove bacteria that accumulates between teeth.

Auerbach explains how to use the device: "Fill the chamber with warm water, direct the nozzle to the gum, and apply it back and forth." The specialist recommends flossing twice a day with water.

According to a study conducted in India, dental floss devices with water are more effective than traditional dental floss in removing plaque in hard-to-reach areas.
