Expert warns: 'Pneumonia is a disease with a high mortality rate'

Chest Diseases Specialist Dr. Saliha Ercan Bütün said that despite the increased use of antibiotics , pneumonia still causes high rates of illness and death in society.
Dr. Bütün, noting that the medical term for pneumonia, also known as lung inflammation, is pneumonia , said, "This disease, usually caused by microbes such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi, is more common in children, individuals over the age of 65, and those with chronic illnesses. Pneumonia can indicate serious illnesses such as lung cancer."
"IT IS SEEN IN 1 OUT OF 100 PEOPLE"Specialist Dr. Bütün emphasized that the disease is responsible for a significant portion of hospital admissions, treatment costs, and deaths, saying, "According to household surveys, pneumonia ranks 15th in Türkiye with a prevalence of 1.15 percent. Risk factors include age, chronic diseases, and smoking. The most common symptoms are fever, cough, sputum production, and chest pain. In more severe cases, shortness of breath and loss of consciousness may occur."
Providing information about treatment, Specialist Dr. Bütün said, "Antibiotics, fluid intake, and rest are commonly used in treatment. The duration of treatment may vary depending on the severity and cause of the disease."
PROTECTION AND VACCINESSpecialist Dr. Bütün emphasized the importance of controlling underlying conditions, hygiene, smoking cessation, and vaccinations in preventing pneumonia, saying, "Pneumococcal and influenza vaccines are recommended, especially for at-risk groups. Pneumonia is generally a disease that heals quickly. Post-treatment medical checkups are essential."
THINGS TO CONSIDERSpecialist Dr. Bütün stated that similar symptoms could also indicate serious illnesses such as lung cancer, adding, "In suspicious cases, a pulmonologist should be consulted. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are vital."
