PAY ATTENTION TO SUCH SYMPTOMS!

The frequent inclusion of earthquake, death, or loss themes in their play can also be an indicator of the emotional impact they are experiencing. When such symptoms reach a level that disrupts a child's daily life, emotional support is recommended. Clinical Psychologist Eda Kalaycıoğlu noted that children may exhibit similar reactions, such as fear and anxiety, after an earthquake. She said, "These emotions are often experienced very intensely. Therefore, raising awareness by the family beforehand is critical. To prevent such trauma from escalating in the child, families can provide information beforehand and develop the child's sense of control. The nature of an earthquake can be explained clearly and concisely, appropriately for their age group. This can be a challenging experience for the child. What the family can do at this point is to divert the child's attention from negative images and ensure that the earthquake is viewed not only as a destructive event but also as a natural event that can be prevented."

"CHILDREN MAY HAVE MORE DIFFICULTY IN OVERCOMING EVENTS"

Kalaycıoğlu emphasized that natural disasters like earthquakes can be traumatic experiences for both adults and children, adding, "However, children may have a harder time getting over such events. Therefore, some precautions that can be taken beforehand can make the process easier."

CHILDREN SHOULD BE INFORMED ABOUT EARTHQUAKES

Kalaycıoğlu emphasized the importance of parents explaining earthquakes to children in realistic and simple language, saying, "For example, statements like, 'We live in earthquake country, and we feel earthquakes as tremors. This isn't always dangerous, and we can take precautions against it.' Conducting earthquake drills with children, identifying safe areas of the house, and practicing in these areas can be effective in managing the moment. Properly teaching the 'drop, cover, hold on' routine and preparing a disaster kit with children can help children feel safe. As adults, we must first maintain our own composure. In the event of an earthquake, it's important to go to the predetermined safe area with the child and use clear, descriptive statements. For example, use phrases like, 'We're going under the table, and now you're with me,' to make the child feel safe. The stress experienced by children can be reflected in their behavior. During this process, parents can seek support from a child development specialist and help their child get back on track."
