Dangerous Lunch: Which Plastics Can Be Heat-Up and Which Cause Cancer

There are several types of plastic intended for storing food. Its safety can be determined by the marking - a triangle with a number or letter code on the bottom of the product.

PET/PETE — used for bottles and disposable containers. Products can be stored in such packaging for up to 6 months, but reuse is not recommended: damage (scratches, chips) provoke the release of harmful substances. Also, alcohol, sauces and heating cannot be stored in such containers — toxic reactions are possible.

PS (polystyrene) - disposable tableware is made from it. This plastic is a proven carcinogen: you can’t store food in it or heat it up. In addition to being harmful to health, it pollutes the environment.

PP (polypropylene) is the safest option. Suitable for reusable containers, withstands heating in a microwave and long-term storage of products in the freezer.

Before using plastic packaging, you need to check the markings. If there is none, it is better to refuse such a product. Even safe plastic deteriorates over time: scratches and cracks contribute to the release of toxins, so lunch boxes and containers should be changed regularly.
