New rules for referrals to sanatoriums from July 1. More specialists will confirm referrals

There is already an amendment to the regulation regarding referrals for spa treatment/spa rehabilitation. The changes came into effect on July 1, but previously issued referrals remain valid and are confirmed on the same principles as before. After the change, more specialists will confirm referrals.
- According to the amendment, the list of doctors who can confirm referrals has been expanded
- In the referral, the healthcare provider includes an indication of whether the health care service in the scope of spa treatment is provided in stationary or outpatient conditions.
- The changes came into force on 1 July 2025.
The changes in question were introduced by amending the regulation on referral to spa treatment or spa rehabilitation.
The amendment includes changes regarding referral to a health resort, as it results from the records, more medical specialists will confirm the registration. As we read, the following changes have been introduced:
- in § 3, section 2 shall read as follows:
"2. After registering a referral in paper form in the manner specified in par. 1, a specialist in balneology and physical medicine or medical rehabilitation or a specialist in internal medicine or family medicine after completing a course in the basics of balneology, or a specialist in rheumatology or orthopedics after completing a course in the basics of balneology, hereinafter referred to as "specialist", employed in the organizational unit referred to in par. 1, shall approve the referral in terms of the advisability of spa treatment or spa rehabilitation."
According to the current regulation, in the event of positive verification of the referral, the service provider sends it to the provincial branch of the National Health Fund within 30 days of its receipt. The amendment adds an important provision to this:
- in § 9a, after point 2, point 2a is added as follows:
"2a) indication of whether the provision of health care services in the scope of spa treatment takes place in inpatient or outpatient conditions."
The amendment also covers the template for Referral for spa treatment/spa rehabilitation.
Importantly, referrals for spa treatment or spa rehabilitation issued before the date of entry into force of the regulation remain valid and are confirmed under the previous rules. The regulation entered into force on 1 July 2025.
