United Kingdom. Scratched by a puppy in Morocco, Yvonne died of rabies after returning from vacation

A British woman who contracted rabies in February while traveling in Morocco died from the disease last week. Her family is raising the alarm about the deadly infection.

"We never thought something like this could happen to someone we love." It was supposed to be a beautiful trip to Morocco, but Yvonne Ford and her husband Ron's expedition turned tragic.

The British woman, originally from Barnsley, died last Saturday after being scratched "very lightly" by a stray puppy carrying rabies in Morocco in February. Robyn Thomson, the victim's daughter, spoke out publicly on Facebook on Tuesday to warn against this infection. "At the time, she didn't think it would turn out this way. Two weeks ago, she became ill. It started with a headache, then she lost her ability to walk, talk, sleep, and swallow. This led to her death," Robyn said.

Rabies is transmitted by infected mammals, including dogs, cats, and foxes, through bites or contact with saliva. Symptoms usually appear one to two months after infection.

Consult immediately

The first symptoms of rabies are fever, chills, malaise, fatigue, insomnia, loss of appetite, etc. However, it can be contained if treatment is provided quickly (within 24 hours) after contamination, explains the Pasteur Institute of Lille.

In France, rabies has been officially declared eradicated since 2001. When traveling to a country where rabies is prevalent, it is recommended to be vaccinated beforehand.
