Nodular skin disease: a second outbreak identified in Haute-Savoie

A new outbreak of contagious lumpy skin disease was identified in Haute-Savoie on Friday, July 11.
A pathology characterized by fever, nodules on the skin, mucous membranes and internal organs, skin edema and sometimes death in cattle, contagious lumpy skin disease (CSD) continues to spread across France, to the great displeasure of producers.
Following the confirmation of a first outbreak on June 29, a first in France, the Prefect of Haute-Savoie confirmed the detection of a second outbreak in the commune of Marigny Saint Marcel, near Rumilly, once again affecting a cattle farm.
" Health measures to limit the spread of the disease were taken the same day, with the signing of a prefectural order declaring infection (APDI), which concerns the farm where the infectious outbreak was confirmed. This order provides in particular for the slaughter of the cattle unit concerned ," the prefecture declared in a press release.
Despite the relatively significant production losses, the prefecture justified these health measures. " The discovery of this second outbreak requires the establishment of a new regulated zone (...) The prefect expresses her support for the affected farmers, aware of the distress caused by this essential measure of rapid and total slaughter. "
