Neuroscientist says anyone with headache should have two drinks

A neuroscientist says you can cure a headache by combining coffee with another natural substance - found in green tea - which will also help boost your focus and reduce caffeine 'jitters'. Dr Ramon Velazquez from Arizona State University said a simple tweak to your daily cup can sharpen your focus, calm your mind, and even help reduce headaches.
Dr Velazquez, who works with Mind Lab Pro, said: "People assume caffeine works in isolation, but the truth is, it can be enhanced when combined with other compounds found in nature. That's where things get really interesting."
He added: "The brain can't actually feel pain, which is why you can be awake during brain surgery. Headaches happen because the tissue surrounding the brain stretches. Caffeine helps by restricting blood flow, which contracts that tissue and relieves the discomfort. It's a natural cognitive enhancer when used correctly."
But the neuroscientist insists that the real magic happens when you combine caffeine with another natural ingredient: L-theanine.
He said: "When you pair caffeine with L-theanine, you get a powerful combination. Caffeine brings the energy, and L-theanine smooths out the jitters. The result is focus that really does go through the roof."
L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea leaves, especially green tea, as well as in some mushrooms. Unlike other calming substances, it doesn't make you feel sleepy. Instead, it boosts levels of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, creating a sense of calm alertness.
"It's not just about staying awake. It's about staying present and clear-headed. That's what makes this combo so effective for work, study, or even creative projects," Dr Velazquez adds.
Research backs him up. Studies have shown that L-theanine helps improve attention and working memory, particularly when taken with caffeine. Many nootropic supplements now combine the two.
"What you need is controlled, focused energy. That's what L-theanine and caffeine together provide," says Dr. Velazquez.
And if you want to take things even further, the neuroscientist suggests another natural boost: omega-3 fatty acids. Found in fish oil and chia seeds, they've been linked to improved brain health and concentration. "Omega-3s support the physical structure of brain cells. Pairing them with caffeine and L-theanine creates an environment where your brain can operate at its best," he explains.
The result, according to Dr. Velazquez, is a three-pronged approach to brainpower: caffeine to energise, L-theanine to calm and focus, and omega-3s to support long-term cognitive health. "Think of it as tuning an instrument. You don't just want to turn up the volume, you want clarity, balance, and staying power," he says.
