The unknown effect of drinking a cup of tea every day

The study examined 881 elderly women with an average age of 80. Participants who consumed tea were found to have a diet richer in flavonoids and, consequently, to have a lower risk of abdominal aortic calcification. The researchers noted that flavonoids protect vascular health through their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

EVERY SIP CAN BE HEALING

Tea's effect on the heart stems from its naturally occurring flavonoids. These plant-based compounds are found in many foods, including tea, blueberries, apples, grapes, dark chocolate, and red wine. However, the study highlights that black tea, in particular, is one of the richest sources of flavonoids.

2-6 CUPS PER DAY

The study found that people who drank 2 to 6 cups of black tea daily had a 16% to 42% lower risk of developing severe abdominal aortic calcification compared to those who drank no tea at all. This risk was also reduced by 36% to 39% in individuals with higher total flavonoid intake.

However, there's another noteworthy result: The study found that other flavonoid sources, such as fruit juice, red wine, and chocolate, had no significant effect on AAC. For individuals who don't drink tea, the research offers promising alternatives. It suggests that consuming other flavonoid sources instead of black tea may provide similar protective effects.

While black tea consumption varies across cultures, researchers believe that flavonoid intake can be easily increased through the overall diet.
