The expert warned: "Sunbathing for long periods of time may increase varicose vein complaints."

Cardiovascular Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Onur Gürer made statements about varicose veins.

Professor Dr. Gürer briefly defined varicose veins and discussed their symptoms, saying, "Varicose veins are caused by the veins failing to function properly, causing the vein walls to widen and become tortuous. They typically occur in the legs. The most common symptoms include a feeling of fullness in the legs, pain, burning, night cramps, and swelling that becomes more pronounced after prolonged sitting or standing. In later stages, skin discoloration and scarring may also be observed."

"Hot weather may lead to an increase in complaints"

Prof. Dr. Gürer stated that hot weather can cause symptoms in patients with varicose veins, saying, "Temperature is a factor that directly affects vascular structure. High temperatures cause veins to relax, thus expanding their diameter. This dilation makes it harder for blood to return within the veins and causes pooling in the legs. This is the primary reason why our patients' complaints increase, especially in the summer months."

"High temperatures can cause vasodilation"

Prof. Dr. Gürer also noted that high temperatures can cause vasodilation, saying, "Heat causes the smooth muscle cells in the vascular wall to relax. As a result, the vessel diameter widens and blood flow slows. While a healthy vein can tolerate this change, varicose veins with compromised structures are negatively affected, and complaints increase."

"A burning and painful feeling in the legs may be related to varicose veins."

Prof. Dr. Gürer explained that the swelling, pain, and burning sensations seen in the legs during the summer months may be related to varicose veins, saying, "These types of complaints are often symptoms of varicose veins. Especially in hot weather, blood accumulation in the veins, along with vasodilation, causes edema and increased pressure in the tissues. As a result, patients complain of pain, swelling, and a burning sensation. These symptoms may indicate an underlying vascular problem."

"Sunbathing or taking hot showers is risky"

Prof. Dr. Gürer stated that sunbathing or taking hot showers can be risky for varicose vein patients, saying, "Excessive heat can exacerbate symptoms in individuals with varicose veins because it increases blood vessel dilation. Prolonged exposure to the sun or bathing with very hot water increases intravascular pressure. Therefore, I recommend these individuals limit their sun exposure and avoid using extremely hot water when bathing."

"You should especially avoid going out between 11:00 and 16:00"

Prof. Dr. Gürer stated that individuals with varicose veins should be mindful of their outdoor time during hot weather, saying, "The temperature is highest between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Going outside during these hours can exacerbate varicose vein symptoms. If you must be outdoors, shaded areas should be preferred and, if possible, exercise."

"Water consumption should be increased in hot weather"

Prof. Dr. Gürer, discussing the importance of fluid intake, said, "Adequate fluid intake is crucial for maintaining blood fluidity. Dehydration increases blood consistency and hinders circulation. This can lead to increased pressure in the veins. Increasing water consumption, especially in hot weather, helps alleviate varicose vein symptoms."

"Swimming is very beneficial"

Emphasizing the importance of not neglecting physical activity, Prof. Dr. Gürer said, "Any movement that exercises the leg muscles supports venous function. Swimming is one of the most beneficial exercises in this regard. Cycling and walking similarly increase circulation. During the summer months, it's healthier to do these exercises early in the morning or in the evening."

"Thin and breathable models should be preferred in compression stockings."

Prof. Dr. Gürer explained that compression stockings are highly effective in regulating venous pressure, saying, "Thin and breathable summer models should be preferred during the summer months. On extremely hot days, using stockings during the cooler hours of the day or, if possible, frequently elevating your legs are alternative methods for supporting circulation."

"Foam treatment can be applied"

Pointing out that varicose vein treatments (laser, foam, etc.) can be performed during the summer months, Prof. Dr. Gürer shared the following information:

Foam sclerotherapy, in particular, is a treatment method that offers a short procedure time, does not require anesthesia, and offers high patient comfort. After the procedure, patients can immediately return to their daily routine and are discharged walking. Recovery time is short, and there is no significant loss of work capacity after the treatment. The only disadvantage of performing the procedure in the summer is the need to wear compression stockings and protect from the sun afterward. However, with modern techniques, this process is managed quite comfortably and safely for patients.

"Recommendations for individuals with varicose veins during the holiday period"

Professor Dr. Gürer emphasized the precautions individuals with varicose veins should take on vacation, saying, "Intravascular pressure can increase during long periods of inactivity. Therefore, taking short walks, drinking plenty of water, and wearing compression stockings are beneficial during the journey. It's also recommended to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during extremely hot weather and to elevate your legs and rest them in the evenings."
