Retinal vascular occlusions can lead to blindness

Retinal vascular occlusions can lead to blindness

Painless and sudden vision loss may be a sign of retinal vascular occlusion.

'HEALTHY VISION IS NOT POSSIBLE IF THE RETINA IS NOT INTACT'

Prof. Dr. Yenerel stated that blockages in the retinal vessels directly affect this delicate structure and said, "Arterial vessel blockages are rare but more serious; venous vessel blockages are more common. Both can seriously threaten vision. The most common causes of ocular vessel blockages are advanced age, hypertension, diabetes and arteriosclerosis. In cases seen at a young age, coagulation disorders must definitely be investigated."

'THE LOCATION OF THE CONGESTION DETERMINES THE SEVERITY OF THE LOSS'

Prof. Dr. Yenerel said that the degree of vision loss varies depending on the location of the blockage in the vessel, and added, "While blockages occurring at the root of the vessel cause a more severe picture, the patient may not even notice branch blockages at the beginning. However, we may encounter complications such as intraocular hemorrhage in the future."

'OCT AND ANGIO STAND OUT IN DIAGNOSIS'

Prof. Dr. Yenerel, who stated that they use advanced imaging methods in addition to eye examination in making a diagnosis, said, "With OCT and eye angiography, the location and effects of the blockage are clearly seen. In this way, the appropriate treatment plan can be determined. In eye vascular occlusion, treatment is often done with intraocular injections. It is very important for patients to be patient. Injections can be repeated several times. In addition to these injections containing anti-VEGF or cortisone, laser treatment or surgical intervention may also be required in some cases."
