He learned he had cancer thanks to his cat.
Cavidan Akkaya, 51, a resident of Izmir, became aware of a lump in her own breast after noticing it on her cat, "Şanslı," and went to the doctor. Diagnosed with breast cancer, Akkaya began treatment immediately thanks to the early diagnosis.
WHEN HE NOTICED A MASS IN HIS CAT, HE EXAMINED HIMSELF TOO51-year-old Cavidan Akkaya, who discovered breast cancer thanks to her cat named Şanslı and regained her health, has contributed to breast cancer awareness with her story. Just as Akkaya was planning to retire and breathe easy, she was faced with the reality of breast cancer. She first noticed a lump on her cat, Şanlı, and felt compelled to examine herself, which is when she discovered the lump. Akkaya went to the hospital to determine if the lump was cancerous and was diagnosed with breast cancer after the tests. Sharing her experience, Akkaya advised women to continue getting mammograms and physical exams.
Akkaya said, "While petting my cat, Şanlı, I noticed a hardness in his abdomen. About a week later, during a self-exam, I felt a hardness in my chest. I told my wife, 'There's a lump in my breast.' I thought it was a mammary gland caused by menopause. The fact that I had the lump after Şanslı made me a little worried. In response, I monitored the lump in my breast for a while with manual examinations."
Cavidan Akkaya, who told those around her about the lump in her breast, came to the hospital to have a CT (Computed Tomography) scan of her knee and was examined by a doctor at the insistence of her friend who worked there, and after the tests, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Cancer was diagnosed in the second stageAkkaya, noting that they were able to detect the cancer when it was in its second stage, continued: "Prof. Dr. Varlık Erol removed the tumor from my breast. Afterward, I had about a month of recovery and began receiving preventive chemotherapy under the supervision of Medical Oncology Specialist Dr. Murat Keser. I believe I will regain my health after the treatment. It's important not to leave anything to chance. Awareness is important, but it's also important to be cautious. Every woman should have routine checkups once a year. It may not be possible to live stress-free, but you can at least take precautions by getting yourself checked."
"HE HAD A CHANCE TO SEE IT IN HIS CAT"Medical Oncology Specialist Dr. Murat Keser explained that most breast cancer cases are diagnosed after the disease has progressed. "Very few patients come to the hospital immediately," he said. "Most patients only receive a diagnosis when they first see a doctor for completely different symptoms. Delays in cancer diagnosis can make treatment options more challenging, increasing the risk of metastasis, and thus making doctors' jobs more difficult. Ms. Cavidan was fortunate enough to live with her cat, and the mass she discovered on her cat alerted her to the condition. If she hadn't seen it on her cat, she might never have come for a checkup."
