Expert warned: "Do not postpone your stomach health"

Expert warned: "Do not postpone your stomach health"

Specialist Dr. Çetin emphasized that this imaging method, which is used to examine the inner surface of the stomach, esophagus and duodenum, plays a critical role in both diagnosis and treatment.

Specialist Dr. Çetin said, "Gastroscopy is performed by reaching the stomach through the mouth with the help of a thin and flexible tube with a camera on its end. During the procedure, small tissue samples (biopsy) can be taken if necessary or formations such as polyps that may be harmful can be removed."

In which cases gastroscopy is necessary

Gastroenterology Specialist Dr. Celalettin Çetin stated that gastroscopy is recommended in cases of long-standing stomach pain and indigestion, persistent nausea or vomiting, abnormal weight loss, suspected bleeding in the stomach, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a feeling of being stuck in the esophagus, and suspected helicobacter pylori infection.

Noting that patients should not eat anything for at least 8 hours before gastroscopy, Specialist Dr. Çetin stated that an empty stomach is important for the quality of the imaging. Noting that local anesthesia is applied to the throat and patients are given light sedation during the procedure, Specialist Dr. Çetin said, "Gastroscopy usually takes 10-15 minutes and the patient can return to their daily lives after a short rest."

What to expect after the procedure

Specialist Dr. Çetin emphasized that there may occasionally be a slight irritation or swelling in the throat after gastroscopy, but that this is temporary, and added that if a biopsy was taken during the procedure, the results will be evaluated within a few days.

Hayat Hospital Gastroenterology Specialist Dr. Celalettin Çetin said, "Gastroscopy is an extremely reliable and effective method for early diagnosis of digestive system diseases. If you have been experiencing stomach discomfort for a long time, we recommend that you consult a specialist and have the necessary evaluations done."
