Danger of bacteria in watermelon

Watermelon , an essential ingredient on hot summer days, is enjoyed on almost every table. However, if some critical precautions are not taken, it can also lead to poisoning. Experts point out that such poisoning can be prevented with simple precautions. Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. Dr. Vedat Göral emphasized that the rind of a watermelon should be cleaned before cutting it: “My suggestion is to clean the rind of the watermelon with hot, lukewarm, soapy water, especially before cutting it, to eliminate any bacteria. Otherwise, the bacteria on the rind can be transmitted when cutting with a knife and cause food poisoning. BEWARE OF SALMONELLA Salmonella bacteria, which causes food poisoning, are also frequently seen in warm seasons. Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Dr. Kübra Dilan Öztürk stated that more caution should be taken, especially when consuming chicken, meat, seafood, and eggs. “Salmonella bacteria is a heat-loving, moist environment, so its proliferation increases in hot weather,” said Öztürk, adding that if symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain are observed , it should be sought immediately at the nearest healthcare facility.
