Novgorod surgeons performed a complex operation on a woman with an aneurysm.

The Novgorod Ministry of Health shared the story of how a 56-year-old woman was saved from a serious vascular condition in her head. A severe headache, followed by weakness in her legs and arms, eventually brought the woman from the Starorussky district to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed a stroke with hemorrhage and a suspected aneurysm. Specialists from the Center for Disaster Medicine then took over the case and transported the patient to Veliky Novgorod. There, surgeons from the Regional Vascular Center of the Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital fought for the woman's life.

Doctors note that this condition is rare and requires surgical intervention. Endovascular surgeons performed a diagnostic angiography, which confirmed the presence of an aneurysm in the brain and determined its size. The goal of the subsequent surgery was to eliminate the aneurysm from the bloodstream to prevent recurrence.

"To do this, a microcatheter and ultra-fine microcoils are inserted into the aneurysm cavity. It's essential to achieve a perfect coil so that it completely covers the aneurysm. The surgery typically takes about two hours," explains Yegor Kuznetsov, a surgeon specializing in endovascular diagnostics and treatment at the Regional Vascular Center.

The patient received assistance from a team consisting of Dmitry Senichev, a surgeon and head of the department of X-ray surgical diagnostic and treatment methods, Yana Petrova, an anesthesiologist, Natalia Severyanova, a nurse anesthetist, and Elena Petrova, a surgical nurse.

The surgery was reportedly successful. The patient is currently in the intensive care unit, where she will spend some time, followed by rehabilitation.

According to the regional Ministry of Health, specialists at the Regional Vascular Center perform up to 500 surgical interventions annually.

We should also add that today, October 29, is World Stroke Day. We discuss the signs of this condition and recovery in this article .
