MPs were scheduled to vote on the hospital reform. The bill was unexpectedly removed from the schedule. The government and the Ministry of Health were caught off guard by one of their coalition partners, the Left, and lacked a majority to pass the bill.
- The vote on the hospital reform bill planned for today (July 25) in the Sejm has been canceled.
- The bill unexpectedly fell off the voting schedule because it lacked a majority.
- In the morning, to the surprise of the coalition and the Ministry of Health, the Left announced that it would not support the reform in this form
On July 25, MPs were scheduled to vote on the hospital reform bill. However, it was removed from the voting block. During the second reading, the Left surprised its coalition partners (more on the second reading here ).
- We will abstain from voting - announced Joanna Wicha, MP from the Left.
"There are elements in this bill that we consider a step in the right direction. At the same time, too many provisions currently raise our strong objections or at least doubts. This bill, which ostensibly modernizes the system, in practice paves the way for the commercialization of hospital operations, the centralization of decision-making in the hands of the president of the National Health Fund, and short-sighted cost-cutting at the expense of patients," Wicha explained.
The Left had already blocked previous versions of the bill, which were rejected three times by the Council of Ministers, but the government finally accepted a slimmed-down document, including provisions that raised concerns. According to reports from the Ministry, during Monday's (July 21st) meeting, Deputy Minister Wojciech Konieczny of the Left did not raise any objections. Hence, the morning declaration by his party colleagues surprised the coalition partners and the Ministry of Health.
With the entire opposition opposed and no support from one of the coalition partners, the government lacked a majority to pass the bill. The decision was made to withdraw this item from the vote. The next attempt to pass the reform will be on August 5th, during the next session of the Sejm.
Recall that a similar situation occurred in March with the health insurance contribution bill. MPs were scheduled to vote on a reduction in the contribution for entrepreneurs, but the Left opposed it, and the bill was also dropped from the voting schedule at the last minute.
