A few days ago, the University Center of the South Coast (CUCSur) of the University of Guadalajara (UdeG ) warned about the presence of an insect known as the woolly caterpillar or woolly cat in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga . Contact with the skin can cause various effects in children and the elderly.

This striking insect should be avoided at all costs because it has spines under its fur that are activated upon contact and puncture the skin of anyone who brushes against it. Upon contact with the animal, the spines inject a toxin that can cause harm to humans.

Professor Luis Eugenio Rivera Cervantes , entomologist and professor-researcher of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of CUCSur revealed that the presence of the stuffed caterpillar in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (AMG) is due to the multiple rains recorded during the storm.

According to testimonies from those affected, the pain caused by contact with the stuffed caterpillar would be comparable to suffering a fracture, being shot, or walking on hot coals . Documented symptoms that can be caused by contact include the following:

• Intense pain
• Nausea
• Vomit
• Tachycardia
• Peripheral nervous system effects

It should be noted that no antidote has yet been developed to counteract its effects.

In addition to these warnings, the public is asked, if they encounter any of these specimens, to take videos or photographs carefully, since there is not enough documentation to confirm or rule out the presence of the stuffed caterpillar in public areas of the AMG .
