In summer the main problem for the elderly is dehydration because they do not feel thirsty.
Francesco Landi, director of the Geriatrics Unit at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, explains to Gerardo D'Amico what happens to the bodies of older adults in the summer, when they experience significant fluid loss. Older adults also have difficulty rehydrating because they don't feel thirsty.
Dr. Landi also reminds us that some medications, such as those for blood pressure or diabetes, should be adjusted during periods of very hot weather.
