Health. Hair: How often should you wash it to preserve it?

Should you wash your hair every day? The question seems simple, but the answer is more nuanced. Just like skincare, caring for your hair requires a personalized approach that takes many factors into account.
According to American dermatologist Shilpi Khetarpal (Cleveland Clinic), washing your hair daily is generally not recommended. Washing your hair too frequently can weaken your hair, cause breakage, and dry out your scalp due to overuse of products. But how often you should wash your hair depends on your hair type, lifestyle, and many other factors.
What influences how quickly your hair gets oily?Sebum is the body's natural moisturizer. It is produced by the sebaceous glands, and when it builds up, hair becomes oily. Several factors can influence sebum production:
- Age. Younger people tend to have more active sebaceous glands;
- Hair length: Long hair requires fewer washes because sebum (natural oil) takes longer to reach the ends.
- Hair type: Sebum has a harder time penetrating curly strands. Thick, curly, and frizzy hair tends to be drier than straight, silky hair.
- Physical activity: Sweating profusely can lead to a buildup of sebum, sweat, and other debris on the scalp.
- Genetics: Some people naturally produce more sebum than others.
The oilier the hair, the more it will need to be washed to remove sebum. Dr. Khetarpal explains that as a general rule:
- Fine hair can suffer from excess sebum and can be washed every other day.
- Thick or curly hair tends to be drier, so washing every two to four times may be enough.
Note : If you find yourself washing your hair too often, try gradually spacing out your washes. In the meantime, some tips can help, such as using dry shampoo to absorb excess oil.
