Bas-Rhin: Seventeen days of events throughout the department to prevent diabetes

Did you know? Having a parent with type 2 diabetes significantly increases the risk of developing diabetes in turn. National Diabetes Prevention Week will take place from June 1st to 8th (May 31st to June 16th in Bas-Rhin), with the key theme being diabetes and heredity.
Heredity remains a largely unknown risk factor. On the occasion of the fourteenth edition of the National Diabetes Prevention Week , the French Federation of Diabetics and in particular the Association of Diabetics of Bas-Rhin (AFD 67) are highlighting this often-ignored link between genetics and diabetes . From May 31 to June 16, a series of awareness and prevention actions will be deployed in Bas-Rhin: therapeutic education workshops, conferences, awareness of diabetes and screening.

Diabetes is a chronic disease, and 92% of those affected have type 2 diabetes,1 the most common form. Among the risk factors, heredity plays a central role, although it is still too often overlooked. When only one parent has type 2 diabetes , the risk for a child to develop the disease is around 30%, and exceeds 50% when both parents are affected.
Having a family history of the condition significantly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. But this doesn't mean the disease is inevitable. While genetics is a non-modifiable factor, like age or gender, it is possible to take action by adopting an appropriate lifestyle: engaging in regular physical activity, adopting a varied and balanced diet, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption.
