Thirsty from extreme heat? These are the differences between oral serum, sports drink, and hydration drink.

Thirsty from extreme heat? These are the differences between oral serum, sports drink, and hydration drink.

MÉRIDA.- Extreme heat periods like the one we are experiencing in Yucatán lead us to look for the best options to hydrate ourselves , consuming water or other energy drinks and even serum.

However, did you know that it's not always advisable to consume serums, sports drinks, or hydrating drinks ? This is because their functions, composition, and uses are different.

According to the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco), improper use can pose health risks , especially for people with chronic conditions.

Oral serums , popularly known as electrolytes, are designed to treat mild or moderate dehydration caused by illnesses such as diarrhea, fever or vomiting.

Although sold over the counter, they must be consumed with a doctor's prescription, as they contain high concentrations of sodium, potassium, and glucose, which can disrupt the body's balance.

In contrast, sports drinks are designed for people who perform intense physical activity .

It should be noted that these drinks should not be used as a substitute for water or consumed without physical exertion, as they also contain sugars and calories that may be unnecessary without physical exertion.

So-called sports drinks , on the other hand, are a more commercial and less regulated category.

Although its presentation may seem similar to that of a serum, its formula is different: it contains water, small amounts of electrolytes, sweeteners and flavorings .

They are not intended to treat medical dehydration and, if consumed in excess, may provide minerals that the body does not need .

Profeco recommends identifying the cause of fluid loss before choosing a rehydration drink .

Under normal conditions, plain water is the best option for staying hydrated. However, under certain specific circumstances, a more specialized product may be required:

  • Oral serums: recommended when there is dehydration due to gastrointestinal diseases or fever.
  • Sports drinks: appropriate only after demanding workouts or intense physical activities.
  • Hydrating drinks: These can be taken as a supplement, but should not be used to treat illnesses or as a substitute for water.

The indiscriminate use of these beverages can have negative effects on your health . An excess of minerals, especially sodium, can be harmful, especially for people with high blood pressure or kidney disease.

Therefore, Profeco advises:

  • Read the labeling carefully.
  • Avoid self-medicating or using products without medical advice.
  • Choose the type of drink based on real needs and not on fashion or taste.

Finally, Profeco emphasizes that hydration should be consistent and preventative . Plain water should be the primary source of fluids in daily life.

Drinks with electrolytes or added sugars should only be used in specific situations , temporarily and under medical supervision, to avoid risks and ensure proper fluid replacement.
