Ministry of Health confirms second case of screwworm in a person

The Ministry of Health (SSa) confirmed the second case in Mexico of myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax, better known as the screwworm.
In a statement, the government agency detailed that the affected person is a 50-year-old man, a resident of the municipality of Tuzantán, Chiapas, a peasant occupation, who began showing symptoms, such as redness, intense pain, fever, and the presence of larvae, after being bitten by a dog.

He was later transferred to Huixtla General Hospital, where he underwent surgical lavage and received appropriate treatment. The patient was discharged due to improvement," the statement said.
The Ministry of Health is urging residents of the states of Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and Yucatán to take extreme precautions with skin wounds, recommending washing them immediately with soap and water, keeping them clean and dry, and avoiding home remedies.
