E. coli outbreak under investigation

PARIS (EFE) — French authorities are investigating an outbreak of severe Escherichia coli (E. coli) poisoning in children in the northern city of Saint-Quentin, where 14 cases have been reported since Thursday the 12th.
The death of an 11-year-old girl has already been reported.
At least eight children have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious condition affecting the kidneys, and six of them remain on dialysis, said French Health Minister Yannick Neuder. "This is not an epidemic, it's not a virus, it's actually a bacteria," the official said during a visit to the area.
The likely source of the outbreak is related to meat consumption, so the administrative closure of six local butcher shops has been ordered as a preventative measure. "Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact source of the contamination," Neuder added.
